Tamil film industry has given many towering personalities. Some of the most big names were intricately involved with each other and remained so throughout their life – MGR – Jayalalitha, MGR – Karunanidhi and MGR – Rajnikanth. There is an interesting real life story of a rift between MGR and Rajnikanth. It is nothing short of a film script.
Conflict Between Rajnikanth and MGR
Even when the filmy graph of MGR was going down and his political graph was at the culmination point, he had remained interested in the personal life of Tamil actresses. His relationship with Jayalalitha is well-known. After becoming CM, he had asked Jayalalitha to join politics even though they had broken apart few years back. Another lady with whom MGR was involved was Latha.
Rajnikanth, the new super star, was also having a crush for Latha. They were close friends and MGR had no problem with that. However, one fine morning, Rajnikanth had proposed Latha for marriage.
Latha asked Rajni to wait and let her ponder over this. One day later, Latha accepted Rajni proposal and they decided to get married. Hearing this news, MGR got angry. He instantly called Rajni and asked him to back off which Rajni instantly refused. MGR asked him to come to Ramavaram Garden for discussion. When Rajnikanth reached Ramavaram Garden, more than 50 goons were waiting for him. Rajni was thrashed badly by these people who are alleged to be sent by MGR for this purpose.
Karunanidhi and Balachander then went to see MGR and convinced him to stop this conflict immediately. They also conveyed that Rajni will not marry Latha.
Incidently, Rajnikanth married Latha few years later. However, here only the name was same. He didn’t marry Latha, the actress, with whom he was in love. In the end, it was MGR who won this battle of titans as he successfully stopped Rajnikanth from marrying Latha.
