Love Story of Padmavati and Alauudin Khilji

After the stupendous success of Bajirao Mastani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has come up with another interesting period film. However, this film has got embroiled in insane controversy ever since it hits the floor. The film is about the love story of Rani Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji. The role of Padmavati is being portrayed by Deepika Padukone. The fringe group which attacked Mr. Bhansali claimed that he has completely distorted the facts. To them, Padmavati never loved Khilji. On the contrary, she went for jauhar to save her honour from Khilji.

Love Story of Khilji and Padmavati

It is said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has completely relied on the poem written by famous Indian poet Malik Mohammed Jayasi. This poem of 1540 AD gives vivid account of love affair of Khilji and Padmavati. The theory of Mirror Reflection also came from this very poem. As per Jayasi, Khilji had attacked Chittore and he fell for Padmavati after seeing her reflection in the mirror.

A poem should not be taken so much seriously. But, there is complete lack of historical research in India. Marxist historians who called themselves eminent historians have completely destroyed the study of Indian history. Jawahar Lal Nehru had also taken a leaf out of Jayasi poem and written about the love of Padmavati and Khilji in his famous book ‘ Discovery of India’.

The place where Rani Padmini had committed Jauhar

Padmavat, the poem of Jayasi, says that the husband of Padmavati was Raja Ratansen. However, the historical account we have shows that the then king was Raja Ratan Singh. This is a very simple and straight fact which should have made people to think that Jayasi has written completely fictitious stuff just to convey a message among Hindus that Khilji was not so bad.

The truth is something different.

The poetic work of Jayasi has nothing to do with history. It was written 237 years after the attack on Chittore. Till then, there was no reference that Khilji had attacked Chittore for Padmini/Padmavati.

There is also no denying that Padmini along with thousands of women had opted for Jauhar. Padmini didn’t go for Jauhar because of Khilji. It was actually the standard practice during those days. Muslim invaders used to be very harsh on women, especially Hindu young women.

It must also be noted that Khilji had lust for Hindu women. His attraction for Kamla Devi of Gujarat and the daughter of King Ramachandra of Devagiri is well-known. But, there is nothing to say that Khilji had seen Padmini in the mirror.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is trying to portray that it was Padmini husband who requested her to let Khilji see her once. This is the biggest falsehood and every Hindu should peacefully protest against this naked distortion of facts.
