N M Mayilvahanan is an IPS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He is widely regarded as one of the best IPS officers of not only Tamil Nadu, but also of India in contemporary times. As mentioned above, N M Mayilvahanan is an Indian Police Service Officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He had cracked UPSC Civil Services Examination with good rank which could have made him eligible to get IAS. However, he decided to go for his childhood passion and opted for IPS. He was so determined that while filling up the Mains form of UPSC, he had given IPS as his first choice. Almost all other candidates give IAS as their first choice.
In August 2016, N M Mayilvahanan was awarded with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal. Jayalalitha had awarded him for Meritorious Public Service.
Recently, he was in news for a short video clip. During the violent Jallikattu agitation, N M Mayilvahanan was surrounded by youngsters who were determined to go on rampage. It would have been foolish for police to use force against those youngsters. N M Mayilvahanan took this opportunity and gave a speech of few minutes to those violent crowds. At the end of his heroic speech, youngsters started to get disperse. That was the power of proper communication of a person who is regarded as honest and trying to help people.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Paneerselvan had called N M Mayilvahanan in his office and appreciated his effort. He also requested the officer to continue working in the service of the people the way he is doing.
